In a bustling town, two jewelers named Somu and Ramu worked in the same market. While Somu was skilled at selling, he was often driven by greed. Ramu, on the other hand, was known for his unwavering honesty and simplicity.
One afternoon, Somu went to an old neighborhood to show his wares. Near a weathered house, he saw a little girl crying. She wanted a small silver bangle for her birthday, but her grandmother, looking tired and worn, sighed, "My dear, we no longer have enough money for gold or silver. We must wait."
Seeing the girl's tears, the grandmother decided to make a sacrifice. She went inside and brought out an old, dusty lamp. "Please, take this lamp," she said to Somu, "and in exchange, give my granddaughter just one small bangle."
Somu looked at the lamp. At first, it seemed ordinary, but as he wiped the dust away, he noticed the intricate carvings and the heavy weight. He realized it was made of solid, ancient gold. A greedy thought crossed his mind: "If I take this now and pretend I need to check its value, I can come back later and trick them into giving me even more jewelry!"
He took the lamp and gave the girl a tiny, cheap bangle, rushing away to plan his next move. Shortly after, Ramu arrived at the same house. The grandmother showed him the same lamp. Ramu, being an expert, immediately recognized its immense value. He saw it was a rare antique.
Instead of trying to take advantage of her, Ramu said, "Grandmother, this lamp is a treasure far greater than any bangle. Please, do not trade it for something so small. I will keep it safe for you and help you find its true worth."
When Somu returned, hoping to squeeze more profit out of the old lady, he found Ramu had already explained the situation. The grandmother was disappointed by Somu's attempt to deceive her. Somu felt deeply ashamed. He realized that while he thought he was being clever, he had only lost the respect of everyone around him.
