Long ago, there ruled a powerful king named Vikram. His kingdom was vast and rich, but Vikram had a deep-seated longing. He didn't just want wealth; he wanted to possess the most precious metal in the world—gold—in unlimited quantities.
One afternoon, while walking through the royal gardens, Vikram noticed a shimmering light behind a cluster of ancient trees. As he approached, a beautiful forest spirit appeared before him. Surprised and humbled, the king bowed low. The spirit spoke with a gentle voice, "King Vikram, your kindness to the forest has earned you a wish. What does your heart desire?"
Driven by greed, Vikram did not pause to think about the consequences. "I want everything I touch to turn into pure, shining gold!" he declared.
The spirit’s eyes grew solemn. "As you wish," she whispered, and then she vanished into the mist.
Vikram was overjoyed. He reached out and touched a nearby rosebush. Instantly, the green leaves and red petals turned into hard, glittering gold. He laughed with excitement and ran back to his palace. He touched the curtains, the chairs, and even the stone walls. Everything he brushed against transformed into magnificent gold.
However, as evening approached, hunger struck. Vikram sat at his dining table and reached for a ripe, juicy peach. The moment his fingers grazed the fruit, it turned into a heavy golden orb. He tried to drink water, but the liquid froze into solid gold in his cup. He was surrounded by wealth, yet he was starving.
Suddenly, his young son, Prince Aditya, ran into the room to share his father's joy. Seeing the king looking distressed, the boy rushed to give him a warm hug. In his panic, Vikram reached out to steady his son, but his touch was too quick. To his horror, the boy turned into a lifeless, golden statue.
Vikram fell to his knees, weeping bitterly. He realized that his greed had turned his greatest blessing into a terrible curse. Gold could not feed him, and it certainly could not love him.
He rushed back to the forest, searching frantically for the spirit. "Please!" he cried, falling to the ground in prayer. "Take all my gold, take my kingdom, but please bring my son back to life!"
The forest spirit appeared once more, looking at him with compassion. "True wealth is not what you hold in your hands, but what you hold in your heart, Vikram. You have learned your lesson."
With a wave of her hand, the spirit restored the prince. Vikram embraced his son tightly, realizing that no amount of gold was worth the life of a single loved one.
