In a peaceful village nestled at the foot of a green mountain lived a young boy named Nesan and his mother. Nesan was known throughout the village for his honesty; he never desired what belonged to others and was always content with what he had. His mother often taught him, 'True happiness comes from the fruits of your own hard work.'
One afternoon, while grazing his sheep in the forest, Nesan spotted something glittering beneath a bush. It was a small, ornate wooden box. To his amazement, the box began to speak! 'I am a magical box,' it whispered. 'Ask for anything you desire, and I shall grant it to you.'
Nesan, being a selfless boy, had no interest in riches. 'I do not need anything,' he thought. He took the box home and showed it to his mother, treating it as a simple treasure rather than a tool for greed.
However, Nesan's friend, Kathir, had been watching from behind a tree. Driven by greed, Kathir waited until Nesan was away and crept into his house to steal the box. 'I want gold and jewels!' Kathir demanded. Instantly, the box fulfilled his wish.
Soon, the secret of the magic box spread like wildfire. Every villager rushed to claim their wishes. People stopped farming, weaving, and building. They became lazy, relying entirely on the box for their needs. But without work, boredom turned into frustration, and soon, the village was filled with arguments and jealousy. The peace of the village vanished.
Seeing the chaos, Nesan realized that the magic was destroying their spirit. The villagers, feeling the weight of their emptiness, eventually approached Nesan. 'Nesan, we were wrong,' they admitted. 'The box gave us things, but it took away our peace and purpose. Please, help us find our way back.'
Nesan took the box one last time and said, 'We do not want more things. We want the strength to work hard and live happily together.' The box vanished into thin air. The villagers returned to their fields and crafts. Through their own efforts, the village flourished once again, and Nesan’s honesty remained the village's greatest strength.
