Once, there was a prosperous kingdom ruled by a wise king. When the king decided to travel abroad, he appointed his thirty-year-old son as the new ruler. Though the young prince was energetic, the sudden power filled his heart with pride. He began to believe that only the young and strong were useful, while the elderly were merely a burden to the state.
Driven by this foolish thought, the new king issued a decree: everyone over the age of fifty must leave the kingdom immediately. With heavy hearts, the experienced ministers, scholars, and elders departed the land.
In a small village, a young farmer named Kavi lived with his grandfather. Kavi loved his grandfather dearly and could not bear to see him leave. He decided to hide the old man in a small, secret room in their cottage, hoping to keep him safe from the king's soldiers.
Not long after, a terrible calamity struck. Massive storms lashed the kingdom, and torrential rains flooded the entire valley. The rushing waters swept away every single seed from the fields. When the rains finally ceased, the kingdom was left with nothing. The young farmers, lacking experience, had no idea how to find or restore the crops. A devastating famine began to spread.
Desperate and hungry, Kavi turned to his grandfather. "Grandpa, we have no seeds left to plant. How will we survive?" he asked in despair.
The grandfather smiled calmly. "Do not lose hope, Kavi. Look where nature keeps its secrets. Birds rest in the branches of ancient trees, and their droppings often scatter seeds below. Ants, too, are master collectors; they carry seeds to their underground nests. If we search near the old groves and anthills, we will find what we need."
Following the old man's guidance, Kavi searched the forest edges and near old mounds. To his joy, he found plenty of seeds tucked away in the soil. He planted them carefully, and soon, green shoots began to appear.
Word of this miracle reached the palace. The king summoned Kavi and demanded to know how he had succeeded while the rest of the kingdom starved. Kavi bravely revealed the truth about his grandfather.
The king ordered the old man to be brought to the court. "How did you know where to find life in the middle of destruction?" the king asked.
"Your Majesty," the old man replied, "strength can build a house, but only experience can find the way home. The young see the storm, but the old understand the patterns of the earth."
Realizing his grave mistake, the king immediately sent messengers to bring back all the elders and ministers. With their guidance, the kingdom flourished once more. When the former king returned, he saw that his son had truly become a wise ruler, valuing the wisdom that comes with age.
