In a deep, green forest lived a fox named Sammy. Sammy was clever, but he was also very proud and often tried to trick others to make himself look better. One sunny afternoon, while searching for a tasty meal, Sammy was not looking where he was going. Suddenly, snap! His bushy tail got caught in a heavy metal trap set by a hunter.
Sammy panicked. He pulled and tugged with all his might, trying to free himself. The more he struggled, the tighter the trap held. Finally, with one desperate, powerful jerk, he managed to break free, but at a terrible cost—his tail was left behind in the trap! Sammy limped away, feeling both pain and deep embarrassment. He thought to himself, "If I go back to the fox den looking like this, everyone will laugh at me!"
To hide his mistake, Sammy came up with a sneaky plan. He went to the fox gathering, looking very serious and solemn. When the other foxes gathered around, Sammy began to speak in a very dramatic voice.
"My dear friends," Sammy said, sighing deeply. "I have realized something very important. Nature has given us eyes to see, ears to hear, and mouths to eat. But have you ever thought about these heavy, useless tails? They only get stuck in the bushes and slow us down. I have decided to get rid of mine to be faster and freer. You should all do the same!"
The other foxes looked at each other, puzzled. Just as some were about to agree, a wise old fox named Rufus stepped forward. Rufus looked closely at Sammy and asked with a calm smile, "Sammy, if you truly chose to remove your tail for freedom, why do you look so hurt? And where is the tool you used to cut it?"
Sammy froze. He couldn't explain why his backside was sore or how he had 'chosen' to lose it. The other foxes realized he was lying to cover up his own clumsiness. "You aren't trying to help us!" they barked angrily. "You are just trying to make us look silly because you made a mistake!"
Ashamed of his lies and his trickery, Sammy turned around and ran away into the woods, never to show his face to the group again.
Moral
Trying to hide a mistake with a lie will only lead to greater shame.
