In a peaceful village lived two friends, Arjun and Rohan. Arjun was a thoughtful boy who always considered the feelings of others, while Rohan was adventurous but often acted without thinking about the consequences.
One afternoon, while walking through the forest, Rohan spotted a leather pouch lying near an old tree. When he opened it, his eyes widened—it was filled with gold coins! 'Arjun, look! This is our luck!' Rohan whispered excitedly. 'No one saw us. Let's take it and buy all the sweets we want!'
Arjun felt a heavy knot in his stomach. 'Rohan, this isn't ours. It belongs to someone who might be crying for it right now. Taking it would be wrong,' Arjun said softly.
Rohan laughed. 'Don't be silly! As long as we don't get caught, there is nothing to fear.'
But Arjun wasn't afraid of being caught by the village guards. He was afraid of the feeling inside him—the idea that he had done something dishonest. He couldn't bear the thought of carrying a stolen treasure while knowing it caused someone else pain. He decided to take the pouch to the village elder.
It turned out the pouch belonged to an elderly widow who had saved those coins for her medicine. When the elder returned the pouch, the widow’s tears of relief moved everyone. Arjun felt a sense of peace, while Rohan felt a strange emptiness.
'Why were you so worried, Arjun?' Rohan asked later. 'It was just a small thing.'
Arjun replied, 'I wasn't afraid of the punishment, Rohan. I was afraid of the pride of having done something wrong. A good heart cannot find peace in a bad deed.'
From that day on, Rohan learned that true courage isn't doing whatever you want, but having the strength to do what is right.
