Thirukkural Story

The Silent Language of Kindness

The story illustrates the Kural's wisdom about those who prefer to seek help through their eyes and presence rather than verbal begging. As there are in the world those that give without refusing, there are (also) those that prefer to beg by simply standing before them

In a peaceful village lived a young boy named Arjun and his father, Ravi. Ravi was a farmer known for his immense generosity. One evening, while walking through the village market, Arjun noticed an old man named Madhav sitting quietly under a large banyan tree. Madhav had a small wooden bowl in front of him, but he wasn't asking anyone for food or money. He simply sat there, his eyes looking weary and hopeful as people passed by.

Arjun whispered to his father, "Father, why isn't he asking for anything? He looks so hungry."

Ravi knelt down and replied softly, "Arjun, there are people in this world who do not use words to beg. They stand before us with eyes that speak of their need. Their silence is a request that only a kind heart can hear."

Arjun looked closely at Madhav's eyes. He saw a deep longing, but also a quiet dignity. Moved by this, Arjun ran to a nearby stall, bought a warm bun and a sweet fruit with his small savings, and brought it to the old man. As Madhav took the food, his eyes welled up with tears of gratitude. He didn't say a word, but his smile told Arjun everything. Arjun realized that sometimes, the most powerful requests are the ones that are never spoken aloud.

The Lesson

True generosity is recognizing the needs of those who ask for help through their silent presence.
